Oh, Marfa

Before starting our journey across the Chihuahuan Desert, Katie and I knew we wanted to spend at least one night in Marfa, Texas. After all, we would need to pass it on our way to Big Ben National Park and we wanted to find the Prada Marfa art installation that’s at the top of many travelers bucket list. We met in El Paso, Texas where I flew in and she drove with all our food and equipment. We picked up a few things we were missing, most importantly our tent, and headed for the small desert town for a relaxing night at El Cosmico. Being from Texas, I was familiar with the tiny Prada art installation on the isolated highway and I was excited to experience the store with Katie, but it’s so tiny we passed it before realizing we needed to turn around.

Neither of us anticipated there to be a love lock fence surrounding the Prada Marfa art installation, otherwise, we would have brought one. Without a lock, I still wanted to incorporate them somehow. Despite having accomplished my goal with a photograph of the store, I noticed a friendly donkey eager for some lovin’.

After our small pitstop, we headed for town. Unfortunately, we had some miscommunication about food preparation—also very important! Thankfully, El Cosmico provides an outdoor kitchen with a refrigerator and two hot plates. We had one skillet, one knife and a cutting board, food storage, and one mixing spoon—everything necessary to meal prep. Although not a relaxing night, we had a good time prepping for our trip.

The grounds were full of large teepees, small quirky trailers, camping tents, and safari tents—we opted to stay in the safari tent. It’s a neat place with some unique decor and furniture throughout the shop. The staff directed us to a community book for travelers passing through to contribute their names and small drawings, but the writing utensils weren’t cooperating and clearly frustrating Katie. Pobrecita.

After returning from our trip, I looked more into El Cosmico and currently follow them on Instagram. I purchased a new pair of huarachaes that are authentically comfortable. Beyond their store front they offer events, live music, and festivals. If I’m not mistaken, Matthew McConaughey rented out the entire grounds to celebrate his 50th birthday with close friends and family. I highly recommend making a stop if you find yourself driving through Marfa, Texas. I wouldn’t mind hanging out for 2-3 days next time.
